alright guys i got a surprise class cancellation so i can tell yall about the stb dress rehearsal show last night and how it went. this is gonna be a long one grab a drink

no JUICY DEETS if you were expecting that. i am not a leaker and will never be. more like a gushy review than anything

so if you wanna hear about how will wood now knows about my university’s garfield club, feel free to read.

first of all, i can’t actually say much about the content of the show itself. sorry if that’s what you were hoping for but, if you’re going to a show on the tour, YOU WILL THANK ME LATER.

however i can say some stuff

like first of all: it is very much a kind of theatrical performance. no shit sherlock, you may be saying. okay sure but what i mean by that is that it’s not JUST a concert.

it’s very narrative based, that’s the most i’m going to say on it.

additionally, based on stuff ww said after the show while everyone talking feedback and such…

after the tour starts, PLEASE DO NOT POST SPOILERS ON TUMBLR!!! this is the kind of thing you’re going to want to see without any idea going in.

like it’s also very much a comedy show and knowing all the jokes beforehand will kinda ruin it.

so if you wanna post about the show on tumblr after you’ve seen it, maybe like. tag it or something. or put under a cut.

the show was absolutely fantastic

genuinely the most wonderful i’ve ever seen in my entire life

i laughed my ass off, i cried a little, i thought way too hard about my own life decisions

the vending machine at the studio only took ones (LITERALLY FUCK OFF THATS SO DUMB) so i spent most of the show with the driest mouth known to man

i’d had a sprite from said vending machine when i first got there because they also don’t have any water in it (????????) but not even like a whole can it got warm super fast

including will’s girlfriend!! who is very pretty and seems very very nice.

she took our phones at the doors and checked our IDs and such and she was fine with the fact that i do not own a piece of ID that confirms my date of birth so that was cool.

the phone pouches we had were handmade by her apparently! they were really cool and she did a great job

i met will after the show after trying to offer feedback while we were still doing that that and stumbling through my horrific brain fog to say nothing of value because i was terribly sleep deprived!

me and jay are friends IRL, we go to the same college. people who both A. follow me and B. consistently read my ramblings in the tags will know this. but there are like three of those people AND i’m putting tags on this post so yeah

anyways we are both members of the executive board of the (officially recognized) GARFIELD CLUB at our university.

and because the garfield club’s primary demographic is gay/trans autistic people, there’s a huge population of will wood fans in that club.

so jay brought two excellent drawings he’d made for the club, originally to recruit members, for will to sign.

because we have garfield show and tell contest on wednesday and we wanted to fuckin win

ANYWAYS.

these drawings, by the way, just happened to be of garfield being crucified and of garfield as hatsune miku.

will’s reaction to seeing these drawings was, and i quote, “what the fuck”

his reaction to the existence of the garfield club was, and i quote, “what the fuck”

both like a very amused, bewildered what the fuck.

he then signed them with possibly the greatest thing he’s ever signed ANYTHING and i’ll have to force jay to post them.

i also showed him a drawing i made for him, because i wanted to make a drawing for him.

he said my drawing was really really cool and he was really happy that i got his nose right because he never sees that

i was SO happy to hear that i was like ready to cry i was scared that drawing sucked

cuz i just did in the course of like a few hours while sitting at a random table in a big room on campus and all that whatever

but like yeah he called his girlfriend over she complimented it too

he signed it!!!

we took a picture and it looked a million times better than the two other pictures i have with him so that’s great

OKAY, SIT DOWN BECAUSE I HAVE MORE TO SAY ABOUT HER THAN I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT (I've been here for like an hour or more)

Her design was made by both me and my friend @xommed, and more than a variant we think of her as our interpretation of the character, which may or may not be very different from the original Lux because the only thing we have from he is fro when she was a kid, so we kinda made up all about her lol

She lives in the Omega Timeline with her parents Dream and Cross, and her half brother Palette. Her best friends are Shino (one of the afterdeath kids) and Drew/Sasha (Mine and Xomma's horrordust fankid), though she is friend with a whole lot of other characters and fankids (The Death kids, Gradient, Blue Print, PJ, etc)

Lux doesn't have a defined age, as sometimes we may draw her older or younger depending on the situation, but most of the time we draw her as a teen or young adult. If I had to be a bit more specific regarding her age, I'd say she's about a year older than Shino and Drew

She is a calm and kind person who won't hesitate to help people, but she's not afraid to say things just how they are or kick someone's ass for being an asshole. Her world view is similar to Dream's but a bit more realistic; she belives that anyone can be a good person if they try, but she knows that not everyone really wants to try to be good

In her friend group she is the voice of reason, but just because she's usually the smart one it doesn't mean that she doesn't have her stupid moments either. She can be very silly, but knows when to get serious. Lux usually likes going along with whatever dumb thing Sasha and Shino have going on, sometimes even she herself initiating said dumbery, but knows where the line lies for things

Regarding school, Lux is a decent enough student. She is a smart girl, but school is just so boring! She does just the bare minimum to pass, leaving homework undone and projects half baked. She may be the "voice of reason" in most occations, but that doesn't mean she follows her own advice when it comes to responsability

As noted in the previous paragraph, Lux can be a bit "rebelious". She doesn't take certain laws, rules and regulations seriously, either because she thinks they're dumb or can't make any sense of them (Example: doing grafities in the Omega Timeline, eating in class, elbows on the table while eating, etc). There has also been ocations in which she has skipped classess she finds easy (like English class to give an example) out of boredom or gotten out of her house when she wasn't allowed to (She always notifies Palette though, so at least someone knows where she is + she knows her brother is not gonna snitch, because she does the same for him)

Lux has a very good relationship with her family, but her parents can sometimes be a bit too overbearing for her, specially when they talk about responsability. With Palette everything is all good all the time. They constantly tease each other about certain things, but they know there's no intent to hurt behind their words. The siblings are always there for each other when they need them

Some fun facts about her: · She can change her "hair" however she wants. Most of the time she has it like how you see in my art, but if she wanted to she could change it so it lookes more like canon Lux, or make it longer, make it defy grabity, etc. The only thing she can't change about it is the colour · She's very intuitive when it comes to figuring out people's feelings and what to do about them. However, she has a bit of a rougher time when it comes to figuring out her own feelings · She is a self sacrificing type of person. She'd do and give anything, and I mean, ANYTHING for the people she loves · She's a lesbian (of course she is) · Her design was subconciously inspired by Hatsune Miku (we didn't realise how similar they were until later on)

Internet news:

About a month ago, popular VTuber Pikamee was planning to stream Hogwarts Legacy. There was a backlash to this, though how much of a backlash is now unclear because some of the obvious lightning rods for backlash (e.g. Pikamee's Hogwarts Legacy tweets) were later deleted.

During this backlash, Pikamee canceled the Hogwarts Legacy streams, then decided to take the rest of February off. It's unclear whether this is related to the backlash, but many people have assumed it is, because it's the simplest explanation that can be constructed from available evidence. I think it's a reasonable assumption; riding out the storm was probably a major contributing factor in the break, though other considerations (like stress or IRL issues) may have made it a more appealing solution.

Recently, Pikamee announced her "graduation". For my mutuals that don't follow VTubers, that basically means the retirement of a VTuber persona. Graduation has many possible causes; disagreements between talent and agency, scheduling problems, the talent losing the interest/time/etc required to be a VTuber, etc.

It should go without saying that a lot of people blame the Hogwarts Legacy backlash, because it's the simplest explanation that can be constructed from available evidence. This assumption, I think, is less reasonable. Graduation is a big decision, most controversies are (or at least are assumed to be) temporary. If the Hogwarts Legacy thing played a part, I suspect it's a secondary consideration, e.g. the Discourse around it made Pikamee more cognizant of how her gaming preferences would by publicly analyzed if she kept streaming on such a big public platform.

To my knowledge, the VTuber group Pikamee worked for (VOMS Project) has not provided a specific explanation for Pikamee's graduation or responded to questions about whether it was Harry-Potter-related. For some reason, they're reluctant to touch this controversy made of smaller controversies and plugged into a much larger one with a 10-foot virtual pole.

Anyways, the Internet reacted typically. By which I mean that marginalized groups (in this case mostly trans VTuber fans) worried about their safety, a vocal minority proved them right, and most people don't care. A lot of Pikamee fans have blamed trans people, their allies, and the broader LGBTQIA+ community for Pikamee not streaming any more, which is ridiculous.

Even if the Hogwarts Legacy controversy is the only reason Pikamee graduated, it's not necessarily related to trans stuff. JKR has other questionable political beliefs, many of which leaked into her work. There's also the fact that alt-right/GamerGate figureheads played leading roles in the game's development. Put this together and you have a game whose primary sin is not being connected to (and directly supporting) a transphobe, but having an antisemetic plot.

And even if it was just the trans stuff...blaming all trans people for the actions of Pikamee's critics is just...pointless, unjust, and dumb. Also a form of bigotry in and of itself. I doubt these people would react well to all white women being blamed for the shit JK Rowling writes. And for that matter, I'm willing to bet real-world money that more of the critics were VTuber fans than LGBTQIA+. If you're going to blame unrelated people for the backlash, shouldn't you focus on people who share demographics with an overwhelming majority of the critics?

The transphobic shit being done in Pikamee's name covers the whole spectrum of Internet activity. On one hand, some people are doing things like drawing Hatsune Miku burning a trans pride flag, which would be charmingly lolrandom if it wasn't also transphobic. On the other hand, there's the typical harassment and slur-tweeting and shit, either trying to make queer people feel unwelcome in their communities or expressing anger at them which achieves the same end result.

Pikamee is as eager to address the controversy as VOMS is, but most fans (including the ones that don't really care about the controversy) agree that the anti-trans backlash is not how Pikamee wants her community to act. They think that fans should adopt Pikamee's generally easygoing attitude to her graduation.

But some people are angry, and won't let things like that get in the way of lashing out. And contrary to what certain pundits imply, trans people make a very easy target.

My favorite part of illustrating is the sketching phase! Followed by inking and coloring, however I had noticed something that made me think...

And then it hit me...

THE MIKU BANG(S)

Without even thinking, my muscle memory always prompts me to draw the Miku Bang (or that large chunky bang between a character's eyes). Its obviously not called that, but it was sort of an inside joke during college with @skelelock without any hate for it or towards Vocaloid.

It was a stylistic choice that most people influenced by anime/manga seem to do whether intentionally or unintentionally and thats fine. I had downloaded tons of Vocaloid songs to my phone and even cosplay several different characters from the fandom back in the day, so I understand the appeal. My only struggle was trying to move away from this sort of style because, like most artists, their style evolves as they continue their creative journey. I personally didn't want to focus on this anime style, that's not to say no one should, but it just wasn't for me when I got into college.

I spent all of high school trying to draw anime because that was my goal back then, however its now become like a "battle" to break that habit. I still love anime, but I found a different style that I enjoyed more: in fact I found several, so my journey is still not done!

This particular style just had an awful representation in our "professional" setting (also known as college) which is DUMB!

There is nothing wrong with anime being what inspired someone to get into art. Its how I started and you can clearly see some references to it in my work. Now when I in that transition phase of finding my art style, it was usually when I was told that my art had big eyes and other exaggerated features that made my professors and colleagues say that it was still anime. (See below finished piece for context)

Now this isn't the "traditional" anime style, but I was trying to focus on getting into children's & middle grade book illustration and publishing so of course I'm still not going to drawing hyper-realistically. That field of work is still filled with exaggeration between styles, but again, because when I started college doing anime art, my brain has now associated anything I create that even remotely looks like anime as "bad".

WHICH THAT MINDSET IS OBVIOUSLY TERRIBLE TO HAVE SO I HOPE NO ONE HAS TO GO THROUGH THAT.

But because that's how my work and I were perceived at the start, having the feedback be rather negative, its become a very long almost healing journey to repair my way of thinking. Now the funny thing about this whole thing is, I truly believe that the professionals, teachers and mentors I met through college all were not trying to be negative on purpose.

It was them trying to push me outside of my comfort zone.

Everyone's creative journey and artistic ability is different, so please try to not beat yourself up over feedback/critiques. If you want to be good at something, a hobby, an artistic style, etc. You need to practice.

You will get discouraged, but thats just part of the process.

Mmk so...I started drawing again about 4 years ago. Figured I’d make a post real quick comparing my old shit to my new and improved shit.

I won’t bother with my drawings from before I got my tablet. Which I got about 3 years ago. If you MUST see all my drawings for whatever reason, I have this art tag right here.

So...first ever drawing with my tablet, Rolling Girl. I was just getting used to drawing digitally and man I liked it more than traditional immediately.

But oh dear, I still sucked.

Then about 3 years later, I drew another Rolling Girl.

Better. Still needs improving, but it’s better. Hands are still a bitch to draw.

A month after that, I learned some new stuff and made something even better (for Miku Day~).

...I still don’t know how I pulled that one off, but okay. I’m super proud of that one.

Another month later, we have my most recent drawing from two days ago

Someone actually tagged this one as ‘art goals’ and I’ve never had someone say such a thing about something I’ve drawn. I actually teared up. Thank you to whoever that was, you made this artist VERY happy. I’d also like to thank my wonderful artist friends I very much admire *cough*Indie,Cat,Lu*cough* who have also said I’m getting better, my art is cute, etc. AND OF COURSE my lovely girlfriend for always believing in me~ ♥

I never thought I would improve. I thought I’d be forever doomed when it comes to drawing. The most important thing is to not give up. I never did even when I wanted to at times. No matter how many times I cried cuz I sucked and it was frustrating, I never stopped trying.

I don’t actuslly think “divorced” describes anything they have going on accurately at ALL, there’s just a lot of asoryuu divorce jokes and i think divorce is funny so I nod along, but they’re not divorced. They cant be divorced bc they weren’t together and like not in a “characters who have never been married but are still somehow divorced” way theyre just more like.
